JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 23 Palestinians in multiple predawn military raids across occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City and the West Bank Tuesday, locals said.
Amjad Abu Asab, head of the Jerusalem Committee for Families of Prisoners, told Ma’an that Israeli forces, in addition to detaining 15, raided a number of Old City homes and delivered summons to several Palestinians for interrogation.
Abu Asab said the detention raid was likely executed as the Israeli authorities prepare for upcoming Jewish holidays, which are often accompanied by increased restrictions on Palestinians.
Abu Asab said all of those detained early Tuesday were former prisoners accused by Israeli intelligence in the past of involvement in activities carried out “in defense of Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
The head identified the detainees as Thaer Zighayyar, Thaer Abu Sbeih, Layth Gheith, Ahmad al-Shaweesh, Noor al-Shalabi, Layth al-Shalabi, Amjad Ghroof, Raed Ghroof, Walid Tuffahah, Amir Bilbeisi, Omar Zaanin, Mahmoud Najib, Rawhi al-Kulgasi, Bassam Hijazi and Muhammad Abu Shushah.
An Israeli police spokesperson was not immediately available for comment on the raids.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society meanwhile said Ayyub Ibrahim Shalaldeh and Mahmoud Farouq Zamaareh were detained from the Hebron district and Shadi Hassan Shuli and Sami Ahmad Birawi from the Asira al-Shamaliya town near Nablus in the West Bank.
From the Ramallah and al-Bireh district, Israeli forces detained Ahmad Abd al-Wahed Thiab and Thaer Kamal al-Nubani. Israeli forces also detained Zahi Ibrahim al-Dik from the Salfit district.
Locals told Ma’an that a Palestinian child was injured after an Israeli ordnance blew off during a raid in al-Dheisheh refugee camp in southern Bethlehem.
Israeli forces raided several homes in the refugee camp and a printing workshop belonging to Akram Shufat, confiscating all computers and printers from the shop.
Israeli forces also raided the home of camp resident Shadi Abu Ajamiyeh and confiscated his and his family members’ mobile phones before detaining him.
Clashes erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces until morning hours inside the refugee camp, locals added.
As many in Israel prepare to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim, which begins at sundown on Wednesday, Israeli forces have heightened security measures across occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
A source in the Palestinian liaison department told Ma'an Monday that Israeli forces are expected to shut down all but one military checkpoint between the West Bank and Israel in anticipation of the holiday. The Israeli army could not immediately confirm the closures.
Israel regularly closes checkpoints and steps up military and police presence during Jewish holidays, including, most recently, in September ahead of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), when West Bank checkpoints were closed and large numbers of Israeli forces deployed across occupied East Jerusalem.
A succession of Jewish holidays that month -- and accompanying visits by Jewish groups to the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound -- played a major role in triggering a wave of unrest that subsequently swept the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel.
The violence has carried on unabated into 2016, with over 200 Palestinians and nearly 30 Israelis left dead since October, as well as thousands more Palestinians wounded in clashes with Israeli forces. Two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese have also been killed.
