GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Egyptian authorities on Sunday reopened the Rafah crossing in the southern besieged Gaza Strip Allowing passage in both directions before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
The Rafah crossing administration said the Egyptian authorities had decided to reopen the crossing on Sunday to allow the passage of only 100 individuals from the Gaza Strip into Egypt.
The administration said in a statement that the crossing will also be open for the return of the hundreds of people stranded at the Egyptian checkpoints and in front of the gates of the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian authorities close the crossing every Friday and Saturday, while only about 300 individuals cross per day, under strict conditions.
Additionally, the Egyptian authorities announced that the Rafah crossing will closed from Monday 20/8/2018 until Sunday 26/8/2018.
There are three crossings into the Gaza Strip and one of them is the Gaza-Egypt crossing known as the Rafah crossing in southern Gaza, which is specifically used for pedestrians. However, it is often closed and lacks infrastructure for it to be a main commercial crossing.
