RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- The Israeli Supreme Court has ordered not to renew the administrative detention of one Palestinian prisoner, setting his release after more than one year in prison without trial or charges, Palestinian Prisoner’s Society lawyer Jawad Boulos said on Monday.

Muhammad Jamal Yousif, a 30-year-old resident of the village of al-Janiya in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah, was detained by Israeli forces in October 2015, and then sentenced to six months in administrative detention -- Israel’s controversial policy of internment without charges used overwhelmingly against Palestinians.

In a statement released by PPS, Boulos said that the Israeli prosecution had requested that the Supreme Court renew Yousif’s administrative detention for four more months. However, the court decided that Yousif could be released upon completing his current administrative detention sentence on Nov. 30.

Boulos said that he had reminded the court of Yousif’s right to take all necessary legal procedures against any further Israeli decisions to renew his administrative detention.

Although Israeli authorities claim the withholding of evidence during administrative detention, which allows detention for three- to six-month renewable intervals based on undisclosed evidence, is essential for state security concerns, rights groups have instead claimed the policy allows Israeli authorities to hold Palestinians for an indefinite period of time without showing any evidence that could justify their detentions.

Rights groups have claimed that Israel's administrative detention policy has been used as an attempt to disrupt Palestinian political and social processes, notably targeting Palestinian politicians, activists, and journalists.

According to Addameer, as of August, 7,000 Palestinians were being held in Israeli prisons, 700 of whom were being held under administrative detention.
