Description
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained a Palestinian teen late Thursday after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier at the Qalandiya checkpoint in northern Jerusalem, media reported.

Israeli media reported that Israeli border guards detained the 17-year-old after he refused to stop at the checkpoint, pulled out a knife and stepped towards an Israeli soldier stationed at the checkpoint.

The detainee was taken to an unidentified location.

Israeli Border Police were not available for immediate comment on the incident.

The Qalandiya checkpoint lies between the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem and is known for frequent upheaval.

On July 3 clashes broke out at Qalandiya after Palestinian Muhammad Hanial-Kasbah, 17, was shot dead by Israeli forces in the area.

Additionally, on July 1 Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian man after he reportedly ran toward a security guard at the vehicle crossing of the military checkpoint shouting "Allahu Akbar."

It remains unclear if the man was armed at the time.

An average of two Israeli civilians per week have sustained injuries by Palestinians so far in 2015, with one Israeli killed, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

In the same time period, however, an average of 39 Palestinians have been injured by Israeli forces per week and 15 killed, three of whom were killed in June.

Qalandiya checkpoint is one of over 100 permanently staffed military structures controlling the movement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
