The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said in a report, issued Thursday, on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, which falls on June 26 of each year, that the torture practiced by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian prisoners, is not limited to the violent tactics used during arrest and interrogation, with the aim of removing confessions.

The Israeli occupation authorities utilize physical and psychological methods of torture against Palestinian prisoners and detainees. According to the report, 95% of detainees and prisoners are subjected to torture, from the moment of their arrest, throughout interrogation, as well as in prison.

The conditions facing Palestinian prisoners falls under torture, the most prominent of these are; isolation, harsh and sub-standard living conditions, as well as medical neglect.

The interrogation period, in which investigators intensify the use of torture, in order to obtain confessions from the detainee, through physical and psychological torture methods, including; sleep deprivation by means of 20 hour interrogation sessions.

During the same period, Israeli forces use beating, slapping, kicking, verbal abuse, threatening to arresting a family member. Other threats include; home demolition, death, denial of bathing, exposure to extreme temperatures, or continuous noise.

The PPS stressed that the torture of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody continues, despite international treaties and conventions for torture in all its forms. The PPS urged all national, Arab and international human rights institutions to exercise its duties in relation to the crimes of the Israeli occupation, including the crime of torture, given the danger it poses to humanity.
