GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces opened fire killing one Palestinian youth and injuring another two near the return camps in the city of Rafah, in the southern besieged Gaza Strip, on Monday.
Witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli forces opened fire at four Palestinian youths after they approached the border fence in attempt to set an Israeli sniper site on fire. Near the border fence is where the Israeli military uses live fire to prevent Palestinians from entering this self-declared “buffer zone” that extends 300 meters into Gaza.
Sources added that one Palestinian was killed, another youth was detained and taken in for further investigation, while another youth managed to flee the area.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that a 16-year-old Palestinian was transferred to the hospital in Rafah city, after being shot in his shoulder by Israeli forces. He is in critical condition.
An Israeli army spokesperson said that Israeli forces opened fire on four youths, who were shot across the border fence, in attempt to set fire to an abandoned sniper site in the southern Gaza Strip. Allegedly, the youths were carrying incendiary materials and wire cutters, in order to set fire to the abandoned sniper’s site.
