BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli police detained a Palestinian near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron on Wednesday for allegedly being in possession of a knife.
Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said in a statement that a 16-year-old Palestinian from the Hebron area was detained by an Israeli border police officer for allegedly having a knife.
She added that the Palestinian minor was detained and transferred to interrogations with Israeli authorities.
An Israeli police press spokesperson noted that the knife was allegedly found in the unidentified Palestinian’s clothes and was “seized at the scene before any attack took place.”
Scores of Palestinians have been detained in the past two years for alleged possession of knives since a wave of unrest began in October 2015.
While Israeli leaders often point to Palestinian “incitement” as the cause of such unrest, and often attempt to connect it to the so-called “war on terror,” Palestinians have instead cited the daily frustrations and routine Israeli military violence imposed by Israel's nearly half century occupation of the Palestinian territory as main drivers for such incidents.
