Description
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces “viciously beat” and detained a Palestinian on Thursday afternoon after raiding a store in the al-Sharayet neighborhood in the Ramallah district of the central occupied West Bank, according to locals.
Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces “viciously beat” the Palestinian -- who they referred to as a “youth” but did not provide an exact age -- with batons, before dragging him from the store to the street and detaining him.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an she would look into reports on the incident.
Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a biweekly average of 85 search and detention raids carried thus far in 2017, according to UN documentation.
Palestinians often report being physically assaulted by Israeli forces during their detentions.
According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,128 Palestinians were detained by Israel as of July. The group has estimated that some 40 percent of Palestinian men will be detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
