BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces shot and detained a Palestinian after he allegedly stabbed an Israeli police officer in the Israeli city of Netanya on Tuesday morning, Israeli police reported.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement that an Israeli police officer in mid-twenties sustained minor wounds after being stabbed in the neck by a Palestinian man, whom she identified as a 44-year-old resident of the occupied West Bank district of Tulkarem.

The police officer shot at the Palestinian, moderately injuring him, al-Samri said, adding that a female passerby was injured by shrapnel from the gunshots.

All three were evacuated to a hospital for treatment. A spokesperson for the hospital where the three were reportedly taken could not be reached for comment on their health conditions.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that police was investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, which was being treated as a "suspected terror-related incident."

Later Tuesday evening, al-Samri wrote in a statement that a gag order was issued by Israeli authorities, banning Israeli media from publishing any further details on the case or the identity of the suspect.

In July 2016, a Palestinian was killed by Israeli forces allegedly carrying out a stabbing attack at a market in Netanya which left two Israelis wounded.

Rights groups have routinely condemned Israeli authorities for their excessive use of force against Palestinians, during incidents which could have been handled without the use of potentially lethal violence.

According to UN documentation, Israeli forces have injured 781 Palestinians so far in 2017. In 2016, 3,393 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces.
