Description
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 31 Palestinians in overnight raids between Sunday and Monday across the occupied West Bank, Israeli and Palestinian sources told Ma’an.
Israeli forces carry out detention raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-nightly basis, with the UN recording an average of 95 weekly raids in the West Bank in 2016, and 100 weekly raids on average thus far in 2017.
According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,500 Palestinians were detained in Israeli prisons as of January.
Northern West Bank
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) reported that four Palestinians were detained in the northernmost West Bank district of Jenin, identifying them as Majdi Abu al-Haija and Saleh Abu Zina from the Jenin refugee camp, Muhammad Hardan from the city of Jenin, and Mahdi Bushnaq from the village of Rummana.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that two Palestinians were detained in Jenin -- without specifying whether it was the city or the refugee camp -- in addition to a detention in Rummana and another in the village of Wadi Burqin.
In the Nablus district, PPS reported the detentions of Mahmoud Saqr Assida, 29, and Musab Tawfiq al-Hindi, 27.
The army spokesperson did not mention any Nablus-area detentions, but said that four Palestinians were detained in the city of Qalqiliya, while two others were detained in the Qalqiliya-area village of Isla.
PPS identified three of the Qalqiliya-district detainees as Issa Yousif Sweidan, 23, Luay Jamil Qashmar, and Maher Samir Abu Haniyeh.
Central West Bank and East Jerusalem
In the Ramallah district, PPS reported the detentions of Fathi Muhammad Hamad from the al-Amari refugee camp, and Muataz Salma from the city of al-Bireh.
The Israeli army reported two detentions in al-Amari, one in al-Bireh, and another in the village of Umm al-Sharayit.
The army spokesperson also listed three detentions in the Jerusalem-district village of Anata.
Meanwhile, local committee member Muhammad Abu al-Hummus told Ma’an that some 300 Israeli soldiers deployed in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya overnight, without reporting any detentions.
Southern West Bank
In the Bethlehem district, PPS said that Shadi Muhammad Fawaghra, 20, Talal Muhammad Suleiman, 20, and Ayman Muhammad Ismail, 21, were detained in the village of Jurat al-Shamaa, while Khalid Issa was detained in al-Khader.
Local sources in al-Khader said that Ziyad Ali Mustafa was also detained in the village, but was later released.
The army did not mention detentions in the Bethlehem district.
In the Hebron district, PPS said Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Fara was detained in Surif, Murad Ashur Abu Sneineh from Hebron city, and Mahmoud Rizq Issa and Ramzi Abd al-Fattah Masalma from the village of Beit Awwa.
The Israeli army spokesperson, however, said that four Palestinians had been detained in Beit Awwa in addition to one in Surif.
