RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities have decided to release 14-year-old Usama Zeidat from prison on the condition he pay a 25,000 shekel bail (approximately $6,600) and that Usama's father bring the boy to the next court session -- with an additional 25,000 shekel fine if he fails to do so.
Lawyer from the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) Akram Samara had appealed to the the military court at Ofer detention center to release Usama, and was granted the appeal on Tuesday.
According to PPS, Usama was hospitalized for three weeks and underwent two internal fixation surgeries for fractures in his leg while in custody, after Israeli forces shot the 14-year-old in the back and leg when they detained him on Sep. 23, 2016.
Usama was shot and injured after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack near the illegal settlement of Kiryat Arba in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron, with no Israelis being injured.
The teen’s family, who are from the Hebron-area village of Bani Naim, have not been allowed to visit Usama since his detention, according to Samara.
Samara said in November during a court session that Israeli authorities had prevented Usama from attending because there were no ambulances to transport the injured boy, highlighting that Usama was supposed to attend court sessions.
Since a wave of unrest began in October 2015 a number of small-scale attacks by Palestinian individuals having targeted the illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba, which is located between Hebron's Old City and Bani Naim.
While Israel alleges many of those Palestinians were attempting to attack Israelis when they were shot, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel's version of events in a number of cases.
Israel has also come under repeated criticism for failing to carry out due process in response to alleged and actual attacks, particularly in regard to the apparent extrajudicial executions of Palestinians who did not pose a threat when they were killed.
In addition to lethal shootings of Palestinian children committed by Israeli forces, Palestinian NGO BADIL has warned of an increasing trend of Israeli forces shooting Palestinian youth in a deliberate attempt to leave them crippled for life.
Rights groups have also widely documented the mistreatment, abuse, and torture of Palestinian minors in detention, and the harsh interrogation practices used to force their confessions.
