A man was killed on Wednesday morning in the southern Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran in violent clashes that erupted between residents and police forces after the latter arrived to secure the demolition of illegally built structures.

Police said a resident rammed his car into security forces and was shot. Several of the security forces were reportedly injured. However, residents said that the man lost control of his vehicle after he was shot by police.

Residents reported widespread use of riot control measures and said that Joint List chairman Ayman Odeh was wounded in the incident. He has been admitted to Soroka Medical Center with slight bleeding from the head.

The government approved the construction of the new community of Hiran in November 2013, to be built on the land of Umm al-Hiran. The residents lost the legal defenses they mounted, including an appeal to the Supreme Court, and were unable to prevent their evacuation from the village.

This is a test for all Israelis, and I really hope we do not fail.
