Description
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 20 Palestinians, including at least two minors, in overnight raids between Sunday and Monday in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, Palestinian and Israeli sources reported.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said at least six Palestinians were detained in East Jerusalem, as Israeli police carried out large-scale raids in Palestinian-majority neighborhoods of the city in the wake of a deadly truck attack which killed four Israeli soldiers in a nearby settlement.

The attacker, Fadi al-Qunbar, a resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukabbir, was killed on the scene.

PPS reported that Israeli forces detained al-Qunbar’s sister Shadia overnight. Israeli forces had already detained al-Qunbar’s wife Tahani, his parents Ahmad and Minwa, and two of his brothers, Muhammad and Munther, on Sunday.

PPS identified the other East Jerusalem detainees as Nidal Faroukh and Daoud Dirbas, as well as minors Nayif Ubeid, Muhammad Murei, and Imad Saranda.

A member of a local committee in the neighborhood of Issawiya, Muhammad Abu al-Hummus, said that Israeli forces had detained at least six Palestinians in the neighborhood, three of them minors, at dawn on Monday.

In the northern occupied West Bank, PPS reported that Israeli forces detained three Palestinians in the city of Jenin, identifying them as Said Muhammad Abdullah, Allam Ziyad Jaradat, and Muhammad Ahmad Abu Tami.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed to Ma’an the detention of three “Hamas operatives” in Jenin.

In the central West Bank district of Ramallah, PPS and locals reported that Musab Sami Awwad, 23, and Ahmad Yousif Awwad, 20, were detained in the village of Budrus.

Israeli forces reportedly confiscated seven phones and an unspecified amount of money while raiding the Awwads’ homes.

Further east, PPS said that Israeli forces detained Moussa Said Mawahra, 39, and Salah al-Din Omar Dibis, 17, in the village of al-Jiftlik in the Jericho district.

The army spokesperson confirmed two detentions in Budrus, adding that another Palestinian had been detained in the Qalandiya refugee camp.

In the Bethlehem district, PPS reported that Israeli forces detained Ihab Iyad Taqatqa, 18, Daniel Abu Srour, 20, and Yazan Muhammad Derayya, 16. Locals told Ma’an that Abu Srour was detained in the Aida refugee camp.

The army spokesperson said one Palestinian was detained in Aida, and two others in Beit Fajjar.

In the southern West Bank district of Hebron, PPS reported that Israeli forces detained Muhannad Jabir Abu Sil and Ahmad Abd al-Rahman Abu Sil in the al-Arrub refugee camp.

The Israeli army said two alleged Hamas operatives were detained in al-Arrub.

PPS, which documents overnight raids by Israeli forces, said in a statement earlier this month that it had recorded the detention of 100 Palestinians, including 18 minors, in the first five days of 2017.

Israeli forces carry out detention raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-nightly basis, with the UN recording some 178 raids in the West Bank between Dec. 13 and 26, 2016.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of October 2016.
