GAZA (Ma’an) -- The Karm Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip will be opened for one day on Friday, according to the Director-General of the Public Administration of the Crossing Points and Borders in Gaza Nazmi Muhanna.

Muhanna told Ma’an that Israeli authorities will allow the entry of cooking gas and diesel during the opening.

The crossing was closed in September after burglars raided the crossing from the northwestern side and cut the through the fence surrounding its perimeter. The burglars caused damages and stole stored goods, which Muhanna said at the time would cost the Palestinian Authority(PA) tens of thousands of shekels.

Muhanna added at the time that the crossing would remain closed until all security procedures and investigations were completed to assess the amount of damage.

Karm Abu Salem is one of two operating Israeli crossings out of the blockaded coastal enclave, dedicated primarily to the movement of goods and the only crossing available for the import of fuel.

Pedestrians moving in and out of the Gaza Strip travel through the Erez crossing, which is closed to the majority of the Gaza's Palestinian residents.

The majority of the more than 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are sealed inside the coastal enclave due to a near-decade long military blockade imposed by Israel and upheld by Egypt on the southern border.
