10 Palestinians detained in predawn raids, as scores of Israelis visit West Bank holy sites

03:00 Nov 13 2016 Deheisheh, Silwad, Jerusalem district, Beit Fajjar

Description
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 10 Palestinians during predawn military raids across the occupied West Bank on Sunday, according to local Palestinian and Israeli army sources.

Local sources in al-Duheisha refugee camp in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem told Ma'an that Israeli forces raided the camp and detained Basil Walid Daamsa, 20, and Muhammad Sami Shahin, 20, after ransacking their family homes before dawn.

An interrogation summons was also delivered to Bilal Omar al-Saifi, 34, from al-Duheisha.

In the Ramallah district of the central West Bank, Israeli forces raided several homes in the village of Silwad and detained 16-year-old Abd al-Rahman Hamid and another teenager, Muhammad Ahmad Hamid, according to locals.

Israeli forces also detained five Palestinians from the Jerusalem district. Local sources identified two of the detainees as Zayid Idkedik and his 13-year-old son Ahmad.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces delivered interrogation summons to five young men from the Bethlehem-area town of Beit Fajjar, demanding that they go to Israel's Etzion interrogation center for questioning.

Local sources identified the five as Ali Muhammad Taqatqa, 38, Ahmad Abd al-Rahman Thawabta, 38, Ali Muhammad Thawabta, 30, Abd al-Rahman Subhi Thawabta, 20, and his brother Shadi, 21.

The Israeli army said in a statement that it detained one Palestinian from Silwad, one from the Qalandiya refugee camp north of Jerusalem, and two from al-Duheisha accused of joining the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Separately, the statement said that hundreds of Jewish worshipers visited Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem “amid tight security measures,” and 200 others visited an archaeological site known as Bir Haram al-Ramah in Hebron under Israeli military protection.

Riots had erupted on Friday night when Israeli police "forcibly dispersed" dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews who had attempted to visit Rachel’s Tomb -- holy to both Muslims and Jews -- while it was closed on Saturday, during Shabbat.

The Jewish worshipers rioted on the Hebron road outside of Rachel’s Tomb after Israeli police and border officers dispersed them, while trying “from time to time” to block the road.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces conduct night raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-daily basis. According to UN documentation, the Israeli army carried out 169 military detention raids over the past two weeks.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of August. The organization estimates that 40 percent of Palestinian men have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
