Palestinian succumbs to gunshot wounds inflicted 3 months ago by Israeli forces

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces critically wounded a Palestinian Wednesday morning at the entrance of the village of Huwwara in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus after an alleged stab attack, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that a Palestinian attempted to stab an Israeli soldier with a screwdriver at the checkpoint near Huwwara, and that the soldier "responded to the immediate threat with live fire."

The spokesperson added that the wounded Palestinian was evacuated to the Rabin Medical Center in the city of Petah Tikva in southern Israel.

The spokesperson said they were not aware of the severity of the youth's injuries, however Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the Palestinian was in "critical" condition.

Palestinian Red Crescent emergency department head Ahmad Jibril later identified the Palestinian as 32-year-old Muhammad Amr from the city Tulkarem, and added that Amr was first given aid by the Nablus Red Crescent team before being taken by an Israeli army ambulance.

Abdullah Abu Salim, 43, a merchant from Huwwara, told Ma'an at the scene that he and two of his friends, "saw [Amr] attempting to cross the road in Huwwara before being shot at by an Israeli soldier who then took out a knife and threw it next to the youth."

According to Ma'an documentation, 238 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis since the beginning of a wave of unrest across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October 2015, the vast majority of whom were shot dead by Israeli forces.

During the same time period, 34 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians.
Throughout the unrest, rights groups have repeatedly denounced what they have termed Israeli forces' "shoot-to-kill" policy against Palestinians who did not constitute a threat at the time of their death or who could have been subdued in a non-lethal manner.

While Israel alleges many of those were attempting to attack Israelis when they were shot, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel's version of events in a number of cases.
