BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 20 Palestinians during overnight raids in the occupied Palestinian territory between Sunday and Monday, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement that eight Palestinians were detained in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah, identifying one of them as Yazan Issam Imara ,18, from the village of Nabi Saleh.
PPS did not specify the locations of the seven other detentions, but identified the Palestinians from Ramallah as Ali Mahmoud Shawabka, Adil Qasim al-Khasib, 21, Ibrahim Salah al-Khasib, Ahmad Taysir al-Khasib, Muhammad Yasin Subhi Hamid, 17, Muhammad Abdullah Salih, 22, and Rafat Husain Asfur.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that eight Palestinians were detained in the Ramallah district, listing three detentions in the village of Arura, two in Silwad, one in Umm al-Sharayit, one in Sinjil, and another in al-Mazraa al-Qibliya.
Meanwhile, PPS said that five Palestinians were detained in Jerusalem, identifying them as Muhammad Abd-al-Rauf Mahmoud, Muhammad Ayman Abed, Muhammad Awadallah Dirbas, Ayub Naim Hamdan, and Hasan Zumurud, 55. It remained unclear whether the detentions took place in the West Bank district of Jerusalem or in East Jerusalem.
In the southern West Bank district of Bethlehem, PPS said Muhammad Nasir Sabatin, 25, Alaa Muhammad Shusha, 15, his brother Islam, 14, and Obaydah Adil al-Shair,16 were detained in the village of Husan.
The Israeli army confirmed four detentions in Husan, adding that one Palestinian was detained in the village of Yatta in the southern district of Hebron.
In the northern West Bank district of Tulkarem, PPS reported that Ghazi Raid Ghazi al-Hajj, 18, was detained in the village of Balaa.
The army confirmed the detention.
Israeli forces conduct night raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-daily basis. According to UN documentation, the Israeli army carried out 169 detention raids from Oct. 18 to 31.
According to prisoners rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of August. The organization estimates that 40 percent of Palestinian men have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
