BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Two Israeli police officers and a Palestinian were wounded on Monday morning in occupied East Jerusalem after the Palestinian carried out a stabbing attack against the Israeli security forces.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement that a Palestinian resident from East Jerusalem pulled out a knife and stabbed an Israeli policeman and policewoman near a police station on Salah al-Din street just north of the Old City, injuring them in the upper extremities

The policeman fired several rounds at the attacker, injuring him critically, al-Samri said.

Israeli media identified the alleged attacker as Ayman al-Kurd, 20, from the Ras al-Amoud neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

A spokesperson for the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem told Ma'an that the Palestinian man was in a serious and unstable condition after being shot. The 47-year-old male police officer, who was being treated at the same hospital, was conscious after sustaining moderate stabbing injuries in the upper back, the spokesperson added.

A video recorded by a bystander following the attack showed a large number of forces deployed in the area as emergency health services treated the Israeli police officers. The wounded Palestinian is seen largely unattended to in the video despite having been shot, with at least two people stepping over him without checking his health condition.

A spokesperson for the Shaare Zedek Medical Center told Ma'an that the female officer, who they said was 38 years old, was in the operating room and "severely injured."

Following the attack, Israeli forces deployed heavily in the area and closed the road between the Old City’s Herod and Damascus Gates to traffic, although pedestrians were allowed to pass, according to a Ma’an reporter on the scene.

Israeli security forces also threatened Palestinian store owners on Salah al-Din and Sultan Suleiman streets at gunpoint to force them to close their shops.

The shop owners told Ma’an that they were told they would be fined 1,000 shekels ($265) if they reopened their businesses, even though “we were not told how long our shops will be closed.”

Since a wave of unrest erupted across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory almost a year ago, a number of Palestinians have been killed or wounded while allegedly carrying out or attempting to carry out stabbing attacks on Israeli security forces and settlers.

Occupied East Jerusalem's Old City and its surrounding areas have been the site of a number of the alleged attacks and attempted attacks. Jordanian citizen Said al-Amr was shot dead by Israeli border police in front of Damascus Gate on Friday -- with his family and an eyewitness disputing he had attacked anyone, amid a three-day spike in violence which also saw the killing of four Palestinians at the hands of Israeli security forces.

According to Ma'an documentation, 227 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis and 32 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians since October, with rights groups denouncing what they have called Israeli forces' "shoot-to-kill" policy against Palestinians who did not constitute a threat at the time of their death or who could have been subdued in a non-lethal manner.

Two police officers were wounded, one seriously and one moderately, in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem's Old City early Monday. The alleged assailant was subdued, according to police.

A 38-year-old female police officer was taken to Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center in very serious condition after being stabbed in the neck. She is currently being sedated and on a respirator A 45-year-old male officer, moderately wounded after being stabbed in the upper body, was taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem.

According to police, the alleged assailant approached the site from the direction of Damascus Gate. Upon noticing the two officers, he walked behind them and stabbed them a number of times. One of the officers then managed to shoot the assailant. Police forces are operating in the area.

According to Magen David Adom emergency responders, paramedics at the site, near Herod's Gate, treated the two for stab wounds to the upper body before evacuating them to hospital for further treatment.

The suspected assailant, a resident of East Jerusalem's Ras al Amud in his 20s, was seriously wounded and taken to a nearby hospital.

The incident is the sixth attack in four days. On Tuesday, an IDF officer was stabbed and moderately wounded near the West Bank of Efrat. The alleged Palestinian assailant was shot and wounded. Israeli security officials fear a surge of attacks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days.
