BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces Thursday detained at least 13 Palestinians during predawn raids across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.
In occupied East Jerusalem, Israeli forces detained seven Palestinians.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) identified one of the detainees as Muhammad Mahmoud Shamasneh from the town of Qutneh, while several employees of the Islamic Endowment (Waqf) were also detained at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, identified as Bassam al-Hallaq, head of the Waqf rehabilitation committee, Muhammad al-Dabbagh, Mutasem Karajeh, Mahmoud al-Anati, Anas al-Dabbagh, and Suleiman Abed al-Latif.
The detentions at Al-Aqsa represent a broader crackdown on Waqf employees over the last week, detaining some, banning others from entering the compound, while hindering the ongoing repair works at the holy site.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an an additional Palestinian was detained from the village of Qatanna in the West Bank's Jerusalem district. However, Palestinian sources did not provide more information.
Meanwhile, a teenager was detained during a raid on the Qalandiya refugee camp in the Ramallah district, identified by PPS as Bilal Mteir.
In the district of Jericho, Israeli forces also detained two Palestinians from the Aqabat Jaber refugee camp, identified by PPS as Tawfiq Abdullah Qandil and Aysar Jumaa al-Samhuri. An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed one detention in the Aqabat Jaber refugee camp under claims that the Palestinian was an alleged Hamas operative. The spokesperson also told Ma’an another Palestinian was detained in Jericho for being an alleged Hamas operative, but did not include the exact location.
Israeli forces also carried out raids in Hebron, detaining Hamzeh Habes al-Alami. While Palestinian sources did not provide the location of the detention, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an one Palestinian was detained from the village of Beit Ummar.
Fayiz Rateb Yassin was also detained from the northern Jenin district, according to PPS.
Israeli forces conducted a weekly average of 81 search and detention operations across the occupied territory since the beginning of the year, with 135 raids being carried just in the previous week, according to UN documentation.
As of May, 7,000 Palestinians were being held in Israeli prisons according to prisoners' rights group Addameer.
