HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 34 Palestinians in overnight raids on Tuesday across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, including one detention in Jerusalem in raids which led to the death of a Palestinian youth.
According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), eight Palestinians were detained in occupied East Jerusalem, six of them minors.
PPS identified seven detained in the Jerusalem-area village of al-Issawiya as Adam Mahmoud, 16, Muhammad Jamal Mahmoud, 22, Munir Kayid Mahmoud, 18, Anwar Sami Ubeid, 18, Atat Dirbas, 18, Qusai Dari, 16, and Majd Ubeid, 17.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces detained Muhammad Nassar, 20, in the Jerusalem district town of al-Ram, after Nassar and two friends unwittingly encountered soldiers carrying out a detention raid while the three Palestinian youths were in a car.
Israeli forces fired at the vehicle, killing 22-year-old Anwar al-Salaymeh, and critically injuring Fares Khader al-Rishq, 20,
PPS reported six detentions in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, as Israeli forces carried out raids in the towns of Dura, Beit Ummar, Yatta, Sair and Hebron.
The organization listed the al-Fuwwar detainees as Muhammad Nayif al-Shawabkeh, Adham Tawfiq al-Wawi, Wissam Subhi Maghalseh, and Bilal Itbeish, adding that Ahmad Ali Ayyad Awad, 25, was detained in Beit Ummar, while Muhammad Ibrahim al-Juneidi, 50, was detained in Yatta.
An Israeli spokesperson, who mentioned a total of 13 overnight detentions in the West Bank, confirmed only two in the Hebron district.
The spokesperson said they were not aware of reports that clashes had erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces in the Ras al-Arud area of Sair, as well as in Dura.
PPS said that another eight Palestinians were detained at the Allenby Bridge crossing between the West Bank and Jordan. The statement identified three of the detainees as Muhammad Qassem Jalayta, Muhammad Nufan Barahmeh, and Mutaz Majed Jalayta.
In the central West Bank district of Ramallah al-Bireh, PPS listed four detentions, identifying the Palestinians held by Israeli forces as Ibrahim Zakariya Atout, Ibrahim Jad Nazzal, and brothers Muhammad Ahmad al-Sheik, 27, and Ali, 19.
The Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that seven Palestinians were detained in the Ramallah district.
PPS added that Mahmoud Salim Thawabteh, 19, was detained by Israeli forces in the Bethlehem district town of Beit Fajjar town.
The army spokesperson said three Palestinians had been detained in the Bethlehem district.
In the northern West Bank, PPS listed the detention of Ghanem Muhammad Ghanem, 24, in Tulkarem, and Muhammad Nasser Huwwari in the Nablus district.
The Israeli army said it had detained an alleged Hamas operative in Tulkarem, but did not have information available on a detention in Nablus.
Israeli forces have stepped up arrests in the past several days, with at least 27 Palestinians detained in raids on Monday night.
According to prisoners rights group Addameer, at least 7,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of May, with 414 of them minors.
According to UN documentation, Israeli forces have carried out a weekly average of 88 detention raids in the West Bank in 2016.
