HEBRON (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 34 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in predawn raids Monday, including 12-year old twin brothers in occupied East Jerusalem, as well as the brothers of the Palestinian teen who stabbed an Israeli girl to death last week.
Israeli forces stormed the Hebron-area village of Bani Naim, which has been under complete lockdown since Muhammad Nasser Tarayra, 17, stabbed 13-year-old Hallel Yafa Ariel to death in her bed in the nearby illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba. He was shot dead on the scene.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that Israeli forces detained Muhammad Tarayra's brothers Tamir and Luay Tarayra in overnight raids, following the detention of his sister the previous day, and his father immediately following the attack.
Local sources said Israeli forces also blockaded a residential building in the neighborhood Beer al-Mahjar of Hebron and detained Muhammad Jabir al-Faqih, 35, Ibrahim Abu Sharar, Muhammad Ibriyush, Muhammad Abd al-Majid Amayra, and his brother Ahmad.
Clashes broke out in the area and a young Palestinian man was hit with a rubber-coated bullet to the chest, according to the sources.
According to a statement from the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), Israeli forces also detained Hazim Jibara, Ibrahim Abu Sharar, 45, and Alaa Ghazi Qaqour, 34 from the Hebron area.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed one detention northeast of Hebron City and four southeast of Hebron City.
PPS also reported that four Palestinians were detained in the towns of al-Khader and Beit Fajjar south of Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.
The statement identified them as 25-year-old Ahmad Hasan Salah from al-Khader as well as Subhi Thawabta, 20, Khalid Thwabta, and Muhammad Thawabta from Beit Fajjar.
According to the Israeli army, three Palestinians were detained southeast of Bethlehem, in addition to one southwest of the city.
In Qalandiya refugee camp north of Jerusalem, the PPS statement said, Israeli forces detained Ahmad Matar, 26, Osama Mteir, 27, Ahmad Mteir, and two others who weren’t identified.
The Israeli army confirmed one Palestinian was detained in Qalandiya, which came amid violent clashes in the camp in response to a punitive demolition carried out overnight.
To the north, the Israeli army said two suspected Hamas operatives were detained south of Jenin. PPS identified them as Muhamad Adnan Nazzal and Tawfiq Rifaat Rabaiyya.
In Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, Israeli forces also detained Mahmoud Tayseer Naaloh, 30, Jamal Muhammad Hamid, 49, and Eyhab Ata Amir, 22, according to PPS.
The statement also identified 11 detainees from East Jerusalem, including 12-year-old twin brother Malik and Muhammad Nabulsi, Ahmad Moussa Abu Dalou, Jihad Taha, Alaa Fakhouri, Adli Fahmi Nasseridin, 36, Thaer Zighayar, 20, Anas Ubeid, Wadee Hasan Elayyan, Muhammad Abd al-Karim Halayqa, and Amir Balbisi.
Detention raids in occupied East Jerusalem have spiked in recent weeks following tension at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City.
According to prisoners' rights group Addameer, some 7,000 Palestinians were being held in Israeli jails and prisons as of May.
Israeli forces have conducted a weekly average of 88 search and detention operations across the occupied Palestinian territory since the beginning of 2016, according to UN documentation.
