BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 10 Palestinians, including a 16-year-old, during predawn raids across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, Israeli and Palestinian sources told Ma’an on Tuesday.
Israeli forces detained three Palestinians from the district of Ramallah, including Hamas-affiliated lawmaker Abd al-Jabir Fuqaha. Palestinian security sources told Ma’an that Israeli troops stormed the al-Masyoun neighborhood of Ramallah at dawn and ransacked Fuqaha’s house before taking him into custody.
Israeli forces detained two other Palestinians in Ramallah, identified by the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) as Maamoon Zghayyar from Um al-Sharayit neighborhood, and Miqdad Darwish, a student at Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron, from the village of Deir Abu Mashaal northwest of Ramallah. Darwish was reportedly detained after midnight at the Israeli Container checkpoint east of the city of Bethlehem.
Meanwhile, in the southern occupied West Bank, Israeli forces detained Hasan Sami Tanina from his house in the city of Hebron, PPS said.
In Beit Ummar, north of Hebron, a local committee spokesman told Ma’an that dozens of Israeli troops stormed the town at dawn and detained 16-year-old Muhammad Muhammad Abu Mariyya after raiding his home, adding that Israeli forces also raided a nearby bakery.
In the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya, Israeli troops detained three Palestinians, identified by PPS as Faris Raafat Dari, Muath Nihad Ubeid and Muhammad Jamal Mahmoud.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that five Palestinians had been detained overnight, reporting two arrests not mentioned by Palestinian sources: one in the town of Tuqu, southeast of Bethlehem and another in the town of Tarqumiya northwest of Hebron.
On average, Israeli forces carried out a weekly average of 96 raids on Palestinian communities in the West Bank since the start of 2016, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), with 68 raids reported just this week.
Israeli forces also regularly conduct raids in parts of Area A-- the 18 percent of the West Bank officially under full Palestinian Authority control since the Oslo Accords -- which heightens tensions with the PA and causes anger among the Palestinian public.
According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons. The organization estimates that around 40 percent of the Palestinian male population has been detained at some point in their lives.
