EBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities handed on Friday a demolition order to the family of a Palestinian who was detained for allegedly killing an Israeli settler in January.

Badir Adais, the father of Mourad Adais, said he received a demolition order for his home in the village of Beit Amra in the Yatta area of the southern West Bank, and was given until Feb. 9 to appeal the decision.

Mourad, 15, was detained by Israeli forces in January on suspicions that he carried out a stabbing attack against an Israeli woman two days earlier in the illegal settlement of Otniel south of Hebron. The woman, identified as Dafna Meir, 39, succumbed to her wounds.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the fall fast-tracked punitive home demolitions in effort to “deter” attacks carried out by Palestinian individuals that have left over 20 Israelis dead since Oct. 1.

Several demolitions have been carried out since, despite past recommendations by an Israeli military committee that said the practice is not only ineffective in preventing attacks, but increases hostility towards Israel.

Israeli rights group B’Tselem meanwhile condemned the practice as “court-sanctioned revenge” carried out on family members who have not committed crimes, amounting to collective punishment and illegal under international law.
