BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces overnight Sunday detained ten Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.
An Israeli army spokesperson said Israeli forces detained three Palestinians from Jenin refugee camp during a night raid, while Palestinian security forces said there were four detainees from the camp.
Palestinian security forces identified the four detainees as Omar abu al-Hayja, 21, Karam Muhammad abu Aita, 19, Majd Adnan Naghnaghiya, 19 and Rami Salem al-Sadi, 20.
During the raid at Jenin camp, Israeli forces reportedly found a rifle, an improvised explosive device (IED) and other "different types of weapons," an Israeli army spokesperson said.
In the neighboring northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus, Israeli forces detained three Palestinians from Balata refugee camp and the surrounding area.
Palestinian security sources identified the three as Riad Fares Abu al-Hassan, 20, Ala Ewis, 27, and Fadi Nidal Abu al-Saud, 20 and who was just coming back from a trip to Jordan.
Two more Palestinians were detained from Qalqiliya, also in the north.
In the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem, Israeli forces detained one Palestinian from Rakhama village.
At least 6,800 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons, according to prisoners' rights group Addameer. Of those, 660 are being held under Israel's administrative detention policy, without charge or trial. Another 470 Palestinians held in prison are children.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs documented at least 144 Israeli "search and arrest operations" in the occupied West Bank during the past two weeks. In 2015, there was a bi-weekly average of 85 such raids, while in 2016 the bi-weekly average rose to 98.
During a research project for a UN submission which focused on Israeli night raids in Palestinian communities, the Jerusalem-based Women's Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling found that on average, night raids occur in Palestinian communities located within 2 kilometres (1.25 miles) of an illegal Israeli settlement.
The group said that the information lead them to conclude "that night raids are part of an [Israeli] military policy intended to protect nearly 600,000 Israeli citizens living in illegal settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank by intimidating neighbouring Palestinian communities into submission."
