Israeli forces hand out summons for interrogation, detain one 15 year old

Description
HEBRON (Ma’an) – Several people suffered from inhaling tear gas during clashes with Israeli forces who stormed the southern West Bank town of Beit Ummar early Wednesday morning, detaining a teenage boy.

Israeli forces ransacked the home of Saqr Sadiq Abu Mariya, 47, handing him a summons to appear at the nearby Israeli interrogation center for questioning before detaining his son Wahid, 15, a spokesman of the Beit Ummar committee against Israeli settlements and the separation wall told Ma’an.

Local spokesman Muhammad Ayyad Awad added that Israeli forces also ransacked and inspected several homes in the town and delivered interrogation summons to Nasr Fathi Fakhri Ikhlayyil and Hasan Sharif Abu Hashim.

The homes of Muhammad al-Alami and Ahmad Khalil Abu Hashim were also inspected.

Clashes broke near the town’s main mosque during which young men hurled stones at Israeli forces who showered the area with tear gas canisters and stun grenades.

An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed one arrest in Beit Ummar. When asked about the reason for the detention, the spokesperson told Ma'an, "The reason is like every arrest, either illegal activity or violence against civilians, or involvement in terrorism," adding that she didn't have exact details regarding Wednesday's incident.

Wahid's detention comes as rights groups claim that Israel indiscriminately detains Palestinians living throughout the West Bank without sufficient grounds for detention.

Prisoners' rights group Addameer argues that as the current system of Israeli detention "enables the large-scale arbitrary arrest of Palestinians...it should be understood as a discriminatory institutional tool of domination and oppression against them."

Beit Ummar has been targeted by Israeli forces in recent months in detention raids, with four residents from the town detained last week for "terrorism and violent riots," an Israeli spokesperson told Ma'an at the time.

Israeli forces also closed the central vegetable and fruit market in Beit Ummar village for the two days in a row last week, popular resistance, Awad reporting at the time that several shop owners were detained and forced to close their produce stalls.

Over 60 residents were detained from Beit Ummar from January to March 2015, nearly half of whom were minors.

Wednesday morning's events in Beit Ummar comes as Israeli forces regularly carry out raids throughout the West Bank, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimating a weekly average of 88 "search and arrest" operations in the West Bank in 2015 so far.
