Description
JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces raided the neighborhood of al-Issawiya in occupied East Jerusalem for the second night in a row Wednesday detaining five Palestinian residents, lawyer says.
Lawyer Muhammad Mahmoud of the Addameer prisoners’ rights group identified the detainees as Younis Ulayyan, Husam Ulayyan, Layth Darwish, Tariq al-Kharoof and Salih Abu Asab, four of whom are teenagers.
Israeli police spokesperson did not immediately respond for comment.
Two were detained from the neighborhood one night prior, one of whom was 13 years of age.
No details were given of their detention.
The Palestinian neighborhood of al-Issawiya, along with the rest of East Jerusalem, was seized by Israel in 1967 in a move never recognized by the international community. Since then, the Israeli government has undertaken a policy of "Judaization" across the city, expanding Jewish settlements in effort to create a demographic majority in the occupied city, according to the Association of Civil Rights in Israel.
The now 20,000 residents of al-Issawiya had traditionally been farmers, but Israeli expropriations of lands for nearby settlements and roads have reduced their lands from 3,100 acres (1,250 hectares) to 500 on which they live.
Residents have historically faced frequent detention, especially following clashes between locals and Israeli forces that break out due to regular closure of entrances to al-Issawiya, which borders the French Hill settlement.
