Israel demolishes East Jerusalem home, 14 displaced

12:00 Feb 10 2015 Silwan (Suweih area)

Description
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian home in the Silwan neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday, locals said.

The home belongs to Ahmad Mamun al-Abbasi who had moved into the 200-square-foot house recently with his 14-member family.

Israeli forces raided the Suweih area of the neighborhood, surrounded the house, and four bulldozers began the demolition without prior notice.

A court session to look into the demolition is supposed to take place next week.

Al-Abbasi said he started building the house in February 2014 and had just finished building the property and moved into it recently.

Israel rarely grants construction permits to Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and regularly demolishes structures built without permits.

Israeli bulldozers demolished at least 359 Palestinian structures in the West Bank in 2014, according to the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.

Although Palestinians in East Jerusalem live within territory Israel has unilaterally annexed, they lack citizenship rights and are instead classified only as "residents" whose permits can be revoked if they move away from the city for more than a few years.

Jerusalem Palestinians face discrimination in all aspects of life including housing, employment, and services, and are unable to access services in the West Bank due to the construction of Israel's separation wall.
