Palestinian man attacked, stabbed in West Jerusalem

18:00 Dec 10 2013 Silwan

Description
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man was stabbed and assaulted by a group of Israelis late Tuesday in West Jerusalem.

Mohammad Marwan Oweis, 20, was on his way home after work to the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan when an Israeli approached him and stabbed him in the hand after realizing he was Palestinian, his family told official news agency Wafa.

Oweis tried to defend himself after being stabbed, at which point nine Israelis described as "religious" attacked him with a club, hitting him over the head and body.

A family member who was nearby managed to stop the attack and drove Oweis to hospital where he is in a moderate condition.

An Israeli police spokesman said he was unaware of the incident.

In November, hundreds of Jewish extremists attacked a Palestinian man as he was driving through West Jerusalem.

Majdi Al-Jarbawi, 40, was attacked after stopping at traffic lights in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, with the assailants shouting "Arab, Arab, he's an Arab" while throwing rocks at him.

In September, three Israeli settlers punched two Palestinian teenage girls in the face while walking through the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.

The internationally recognized Palestinian territories of which the West Bank and East Jerusalem form a part have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

JERUSALEM, December 11, 2013 (WAFA) – A 20-year-old Palestinian resident of Jerusalem remained hospitalized on Wednesday for wounds sustained when Jewish fanatics stabbed him and beat him the night before in West Jerusalem, according to family members.

Mohammad Marwan Oweis has just finished work and was on his way home to Silwan, an Arab East Jerusalem neighborhood, when an Israeli approached him and stabbed him in the hand after he realized he was Palestinian, said the family.

When Oweis attempted to defend himself, nine other religious fanatics attacked him with a club, hitting him on his head and beating him.

Oweis’ cousin, who was nearby, defended him and was able to drive the Israelis away.

He was taken to hospital where he was reported in moderate condition.

Israeli attacks against Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem have increased sharply in recent months.

The attack on Oweis came one month after similar assaults against two Palestinians in Jerusalem, one of them, a 48-year-old man, sustained broken ribs and an arterial cut.

Israelis also regularly vandalize Palestinian property in the city such as cars and homes in what is described as hate crimes.

Police rarely arrest Israelis involved in these attacks.
