Protests continue against PA detentions in Nablus camp

12:00 Jan 21 2013 Balata

Description
NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Demonstrators burned tires at a Nablus refugee camp on Monday in protest against the Palestinian Authority's continued detention of Fatah members.

At Balata camp, protesters accused the PA of escalating measures against Fatah gunmen who gave themselves in to PA security services on Thursday.

PLC deputies Jamal Hwail and Jihad Tamliyeh have requested permission to visit the detainees and Junaid prison in Nablus, but PA security forces have not yet responded to the request, and the detainees' mobile phones have been confiscated.

Sources in the camp told Ma'an that efforts were underway to contain the crisis, particularly by those who were involved in the surrender of the Fatah members.

Nablus governor Jibrin al-Bakri told Ma'an on Friday that a deal had been struck leading to the surrender of 10 gunmen from Balata camp on Thursday evening. The governor did not elaborate on the terms of the deal.

Earlier Thursday, President Mahmoud Abbas had instructed security services to intensify their efforts to maintain security after gunmen claiming affiliation to Fatah's military wing held protests in Nablus and Jenin refugee camps.

They said they were protesting confiscation of their weapons by PA security forces and the detention of group members.
