Description
HEBRON (Ma’an) --A 22-year-old man was given a five month jail term by Israel's Ofer military court on Friday, relatives told Ma'an.
Thaer Nidal al-Owewi was detained four months ago when a group of settlers attacked his family home in Hebron's Old City, his father Nidal said.
He tried to block the settlers from attacking the house, which is adjacent to the Avraham Avinu settlement, he said.
Nidal al-Owewi noted that while his son is being jailed and has to pay a 1,500 shekel ($400) fine, none of the settlers have been detained.
Hebron was split into areas of Palestinian and Israeli control under a 1997 agreement.
The Israeli military-controlled H2 zone includes the ancient Old City, home of the revered Ibrahimi Mosque -- also split into a synagogue referred to as the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
Around 800 Jewish settlers live among 30,000 Palestinians in the parts of the ancient city that are under Israeli control.
