A delegation of 30 diplomats from about 20 European countries, the U.K., Canada and Norway toured the Jenin refugee camp on Saturday following Israel's military operation.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNRA) requested the formation of the mission to assess the damage and destruction left in the refugee camp following the army's withdrawal. Hundreds of homes are claimed to have been destroyed or damaged as a result of the military action.
The Algerian government and the UAE have so far pledged to contribute to rebuilding the camp.
According to a statement from the office of the Algerian president, the government will provide $30 million to restore the damage caused by "the brutal aggression of the Israeli occupation forces." The Emirati foreign ministry announced that it would contribute $15 million to UNRA's efforts to rebuild the camp, and emphasized the UAE's commitment to helping the organization help Palestinian refugees.
Israel’s two-day offensive, meant to crack down on Palestinian militants destroyed the Jenin camp’s narrow roads and alleyways, forced thousands of people to flee their homes and killed 12 Palestinians. One Israeli soldier was also killed as Israel withdrew its troops on Wednesday. It was the most extensive operation Israel has carried out in the West Bank in years.
