Description
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israel's Ofer military court said Tuesday that an administrative detention order for Islamic Jihad leader Khader Adnan is in effect.

The Palestinian prisoners society contacted the court on Monday to obtain a final decision regarding the order. The military court confirmed on Tuesday that the 4 month administrative detention order issued on Jan. 8 is being implemented.

The courts decision to enact the order is a threat to Adnan's life, the society said.

International rights group Amnesty International on Monday urged Israel to release or charge hunger-striking prisoner Khader Adnan, as he refused food for the 51st day to protest his administrative detention.

"For years Israel has been using administrative detention to lock up Palestinian activists without charge or trial," Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East Ann Harrison said in a statement.

Adnan, a well-known Islamic Jihad leader, was detained from his home in the northern West Bank on Dec. 17.

There are currently 307 prisoners in administrative detention, without charge, in Israeli jails. The practice was started under British mandate rule.
