Description
TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces dismantled an illegal settler outpost near Hebron on Thursday, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported.
The outpost of Mitzpe Avichai was established near Kiryat Arba settlement in 2007 and contained nine families. The Israeli military also issued restraining orders against the leader of the outpost, Yaron Kaleb, which ban him from entering the West Bank.
On Monday, Israeli forces took down four trailers at the illegal settlement outpost of Givat Gal Yoseph in the northern West Bank. The outpost is near the government-sanctioned Shilo settlement, which lies on the main passageway between Ramallah and Nablus.
Settlers vandalized a mosque in a Salfit village on Wednesday and attempted to set fire to several vehicles in an apparent 'price tag' revenge attack for the outpost demolition.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that vandals painted "price tag" and "Gal Arye Yosef" on a wall of the Salfit mosque.
Ghassan Doughlas, the PA official monitoring settlements in the northern West Bank, had urged Palestinians to take care on the Ramallah-Nablus highway, warning of revenge acts after the dismantlement of Givat Gal Yoseph.
The term "price tag" is used by Jewish settlers to describe a policy of attacking Palestinians and their property in retaliation for perceived anti-settler actions by the Israeli government.
Settler attacks in the West Bank against Palestinians increased by more than 50 percent in 2011, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The international community regards all settlements built on occupied Palestinian land to be illegal, while the Israel government distinguishes between the more than 100 state-sponsored settlements and dozens of unauthorized outposts.
