JORDAN VALLEY (Ma'an) -- Several Palestinians suffered from tear-gas suffocation, on Wednesday afternoon, as Israeli soldiers fired tear-gas bombs at nature-hikers in the Jordan Valley area in the northern occupied West Bank, while seven others were detained.

Mutaz Bisharat, a Palestinian official who monitors settlement activity in the Jordan Valley/Tubas district, reported that Israeli forces fired tear-gas bombs and stun grenades targeting Palestinians hiking on a trail near an illegal Israeli settlement.

Israeli forces detained seven of the hikers including two women.

Bisharat pointed out that the track begins at the Ein al-Hilweh area and through areas that are constantly targeted by Israeli settlers, adding that the hike comes under a series of activities called for by the Palestinian national forces in Tubas to highlight the failure of Israeli plans in the Jordan Valley.

The Jordan Valley forms a third of the occupied West Bank, with 88% of its land classified as Area C -- under full Israeli military control.

International rights organizations consider the continuation of the Israeli campaign which targets Palestinians in the Jordan Valley, whether though confiscations, demolitions or evictions under the pretext of holding military exercises, as a violation of international humanitarian law.

Israeli soldiers stationed in the Jordan Valley – a Palestinian area that is under Israeli control under the Oslo agreement – attacked a group of Palestinian hikers who were on a hiking trail near Ein al-Hilweh on Wednesday afternoon.

The soldiers first fired tear gas and stun grenades at the hikers, then abducted seven of them, including two women.

The hike had been organized by the Palestinian Authority, which was trying to both expose Palestinian residents to the natural beauty of the Jordan Valley, and expose the Israeli takeover of these areas through illegal colonial settlement and military force.

In the Jordan Valley, known as the breadbasket of Palestine, there are a number of hiking trails and scenic areas. But they have been dead-ended and cut off by Israeli settlements constructed on stolen Palestinian land in the area.

According to Mutaz Bisharat, the Palestinian Authority official who monitors settlement activity in the Jordan Valley, in addition to the seven detained, a number of other hikers suffered from tear gas inhalation.

The Palestinian human rights organization Al Haq has written about the Jordan Valley, “The Jordan Valley comprises over a fifth of the territory of the West Bank and contains vital land reserves for the natural expansion of Palestinian towns and cities. It has abundant water resources – including one-third of the underground water reserves in the West Bank – and has vast potential for agricultural, industrial and tourism industries. The economic development of the Jordan Valley is considered essential for Palestinian growth and recovery and is therefore crucial for the sustainability and viability of an independent Palestinian State.

“Since the beginning of its military occupation in 1967, the Israeli authorities have been systematically appropriating Palestinian land for the establishment and expansion of Israeli settlements in the Jordan Valley, as well as unlawfully exploiting Palestinian natural resources in the area. Through these practices, the Israeli authorities continue to illegally exercise sovereign rights over the Jordan Valley and create facts on the ground with the intent of forcibly transferring the Palestinian population from the Jordan Valley and permanently annexing the land. Over the past 50 years, Israel’s practices and policies in the occupied territory have contributed to the creation of an increasingly unliveable environment for Palestinian communities in the Jordan Valley, often forcing them to relocate.”
