The Israeli High Court issued a stay of execution against the deportation of an American student, who is banned from entering Israel because of "boycott activity," until the court can hear her appeal.
Twenty-two-year-old student Lara al-Qassem, who has a Palestinian grandfather, was granted an A/2 Student Visa for her master's degree at the Hebrew University by the Israeli consulate in Miami, US, for an entire year. However, she was refused entry and was held at the Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.
Israeli Ynet news outlet reported that the Tel Aviv District Court rejected Alqasem's appeal to be allowed in, on Friday. However, "on Sunday, her lawyers said she filed a dual motion to the High Court to block her looming deportation and consider a last-ditch appeal for entry."
According to the site, a court spokesperson said that "A stay has been issued against the deportation, and the appeal motion will be heard this week."
