GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A 15-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed, while dozens of others were injured, on Wednesday evening, after Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian protesters near the Erez crossing (Beit Hanoun) between Israel and the northern besieged Gaza Strip.
A Ma'an reporter said that 15-year-old Ahmad Samir Abu Habel was shot in the head by Israeli forces as he participated in protests near the Erez crossing in northern Gaza.
Medical sources confirmed that 24 Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli forces, while several others suffered from tear-gas inhalation as Israeli forces showered protesters with live ammunition and tear-gas bombs to disperse them.
Israeli forces targeted and fired a tear-gas bomb at an ambulance passing by the Erez crossing; no injuries were reported.
Thousands of Palestinians arrived to the Erez crossing to participate in protests, known as "The Great March of Return," which set off under the slogan "Together to protect the rights of refugees and to break the siege."
Sources added that hundreds of the protesters ignited tires and threw rocks towards Israeli forces, who repeatedly opened fire and fired tear-gas bombs.
"The Great March of Return" protests were launched by thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza -- which has suffered from a decade-long Israeli siege -- who took to the borders to demand their right of return as refugees to their original homelands, now in present-day Israel.
Despite march organizers and Palestinian politicians maintaining that the protests be non-violent, Israeli officials have called the protests "violent riots" and according to statistics from earlier this week, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that Israeli forces had killed 193 Palestinians and injured at least 21,000 others.

The child, Ahmad Samir Abu Habel, 15, was shot with a gas bomb which struck him directly in his head, and lodged in his skull.
A video shows gas pouring from his skull, where the canister lodged, and a group of young men rushing up to help him to an ambulance.
The soldiers also targeted a Palestinian ambulance with a gas bomb, and several live rounds, near the crossing.
Furthermore, the soldiers injured 25 other Palestinians, some with live fire who were rushed to the Indonesian Hospital in nearby Beit Lahia. The rest suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation.
