Description
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least five Palestinians in overnight military raids in the occupied West Bank before dawn on Sunday, according to Palestinian sources.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) said in a statement that Israeli forces detained four Palestinians from the West Bank’s Jerusalem and Bethlehem districts, identifying them as Ahmad Abu Diab, Nasrallah Abu Diab, Mahmoud Khalid Mansour, and 19-year-old Jihad Omar al-Sir, who locals said was from the town of al-Khader south of Bethlehem.

In the southernmost Hebron district, locals from the village of Beit Kahil north of Hebron city said Israeli forces detained Ahmad Issa Kanaan after raiding and ransacking his home.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an, however, that no detentions were carried out overnight in the West Bank.

Meanwhile, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement Sunday morning that 10 Palestinians have been detained “recently,” on suspicions of involvement in illegal weapons trade.

She did not specify when the detentions were carried out, but said they were made in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukabbir and the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah.

Al-Samri added that when Israeli police forces stormed the houses of the Palestinian suspects, weapons were seized, included a rifle, ammunitions, and fireworks.

She that Investigations were still ongoing and that the detentions of the 10 Palestinians were extended until Sep. 14.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a biweekly average of 87 search and detention raids carried thus far in 2017, according to UN documentation.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,279 Palestinians were detained by Israel as of August. The group has estimated that some 40 percent of Palestinian men will be detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
