HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained a Palestinian woman at an Israeli military checkpoint in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron's Old City in the southern occupied West Bank around midday Wednesday, with the Israeli army claiming the woman had a knife.

Imad Abu Shamsiyeh, a local activist in Tel Rumeida, said that Israeli soldiers detained a 20-year-old woman and took her to an Israeli police station for interrogation.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that Israeli forces identified a suspect who was "armed with a knife" at the checkpoint near "a Jewish community," referring to one of the many illegal Israeli settlements clustered in the area.

After the women fled the scene and returned to her home, Israeli forces apprehended her there, the spokesperson said, adding that an "initial review of the investigation indicated the suspect intended to commit an attack."
However, the Israeli army did not confirm reports from Israeli media that claimed the woman confessed her intentions to carry out a stabbing attack due to "domestic issues" she was having with her husband.

Two days ago, a 39-year-old Palestinian woman was detained after she allegedly stabbed and lightly wounded a female Israeli soldier at the Qalandiya military checkpoint, according to Israeli police who claimed that the woman attempted to commit suicide by provoking Israeli forces to shoot her.

The frequency of alleged and actual small-scale stabbing attacks by Palestinians peaked during a wave of violence in the fall of 2015. At least six Palestinians have been killed at the notorious Qalandiya checkpoint since then, with Israeli forces being the target of international condemnation for implementing a "shoot-to-kill" policy against Palestinians.

After a pattern of apparent extrajudicial executions of Palestinians by Israeli forces emerged since October 2015, Israeli authorities and media outlets have claimed that a number of the Palestinians were shot after they intentionally provoked Israeli forces at military checkpoints in order to commit suicide.

While Israeli officials have routinely claimed that Palestinian attacks are part of a international rise in Islamist extremism, many Palestinians have instead pointed chiefly to the frustration and despair brought on by Israel's decades-long military occupation of the Palestinian territory and the absence of a political horizon.
