BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained two Palestinians on Tuesday evening after they crossed the Gazan border into Israel’s Eshkol Regional Council bordering the besieged enclave.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that two suspects had “infiltrated” Israeli territory from southern Gaza. They were subsequently transferred to the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, for interrogations, according to the spokesperson.
The Gaza Strip has suffered under an Israeli military blockade since 2007, when Hamas was elected to rule the territory.
Palestinians often face violence near Israel’s separation barrier, including routinely being shot at by Israeli forces near the “buffer zone” -- a unilaterally declared zone inside Gaza’s territory where Palestinians are not permitted to enter, or during protests against Israeli authorities that often erupt into clashes.
Residents of Gaza suffer from high unemployment and poverty rates, as well as the consequences of three devastating wars with Israel since 2008.
