Israeli forces detain 11 Palestinians in West Bank, East Jerusalem raids

03:00 Apr 10 2017 Hebron, Shuafat refugee camp, Qalandiya, Ni’lin, Sanur (Sanour)

Description
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 11 Palestinians during military raids between Sunday and before dawn Monday morning, with the Israeli army saying they uncovered a weapons manufacturing workshop for the second day in a row.

Local sources in Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank said Israeli forces detained two young Palestinian men during raids in the city, when soldiers also confiscated equipment from a blacksmith workshop that the Israeli army alleged was used for manufacturing weapons.

Israeli troops stormed the workshop, located in the Aqbat Taffuh neighborhood in the west side of Hebron, and confiscated its equipment before sealing it off.

Israeli soldiers detained the workshop owner's son, Raafat Maher Sharabati, and also detained Musab Abu Turki after raiding his house in Hebron.

The Israeli army claimed in a written statement that a joint security force confiscated seven “weapon manufacturing machines” before “seizing” the workshop.

Meanwhile, locals in southern Hebron told Ma'an that Israeli forces ransacked several homes, damaging furniture, during searches in the area.

Israeli forces also raided Shufat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem and detained a Palestinian when police found a gun in his home.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a written statement that an automatic Carl Gustav weapon with ammunition was seized, and that “the suspect was questioned as part of the ongoing investigation,” adding that the detainee was set to appear in an Israeli court in Jerusalem on Monday morning.

Separately, Rosenfeld said that five Palestinians between the ages of 17 and 24 were arrested in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem on Sunday, after they were accused of throwing homemade bombs at Rachel’s Tomb near Aida refugee camp and at passing Israeli cars on Route 60, “over the last few weeks in the area.”

He told Ma’an that two were arrested Sunday while caught in the act, and three more were arrested later in the day during “investigations,” which he said were still ongoing. All five have appeared before an Israeli military court.

Meanwhile, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that three additional Palestinians were detained during predawn raids across the occupied West Bank on Monday.

In the central Ramallah district, one Palestinian was detained in the village of Nilin, and one was detained in Qalandiya refugee camp. Another Palestinian was detained in the village of Sanur in the northernmost district of Jenin.

Palestinian prisoners’ rights organizations said in a joint report on Sunday that Israeli forces detained 509 Palestinians across the occupied Palestinian territory during the month of March, including 75 male teenagers, 11 women, two teenage girls, five journalists, and at least one Palestinian lawmaker.

Some 160 Palestinians were detained in occupied East Jerusalem, while 338 were detained in the occupied West Bank, and 11 were detained from the besieged Gaza Strip, Sunday’s report stated.

The report added that 111 of these prisoners were being held under administrative detention -- Israel’s infamous policy of internment without trial or charges.

The report came days after the Palestinian Prisoners’ Center for Studies estimated that Israeli authorities had detained some 1,360 Palestinians in the first three months of 2017.

According to Addameer, 6,500 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of January, including 53 women, 300 minors, and 536 held in administrative detention. The group has estimated that 40 percent of Palestinian men have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
