Description
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 33 Palestinians between Wednesday and Thursday during overnight raids carried out in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that 18 of those confirmed as detained by the army were suspected of “terrorist activities.”

In the Shufat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem, Yasin Khamis Ibrahim was detained by Israeli forces, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).

In the neighborhood of Issawiya in East Jerusalem, a member of a local follow-up committee Muhammad Abu al-Hummus said that undercover Israeli forces dressed up as civilians raided the central part of the neighborhood late on Wednesday, causing clashes to erupt between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces.

According to Abu al-Hummus, an Israeli undercover unit raided the area, detaining two youths who he identified as Muhammad Ahmad Ubeid and Nimr Nasser Mahmoud.

He also reported that Israeli forces had opened live fire on the community during the clashes, and fired rubber-coated steel bullets “randomly” at Palestinian homes in the area.

In the northern occupied West Bank, Israeli forces carried out raids in the Jenin district, detaining a Palestinian from the Jenin refugee camp for being an alleged Hamas operative, according to an Israeli army spokesperson.

A statement released by PPS confirmed the detention in the Jenin refugee camp, identifying the Palestinian as Islam Ali Azaiza.

In Tulkarem, Israeli forces detained three Palestinians from Nur Shams refugee camp, identified by PPS as Ismail Izzat Jaber, 24, Ramez Abd al-Hakim Elayyan, 20, and Imad Mahmoud Masharqa, 30.

Adel Hani Omar, 22, was also detained in the Tulkarem-area village of Farun, while Ahmad al-Araj, 26, and Bassam Mari, 46, were detained in the village of Dhinnaba.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed all six detentions in Tulkarem.

The spokesperson also told Ma’an that a Palestinian was detained in the village of al-Aqaba in the district of Tubas.

In Nablus, Izzat Yamin was detained from the village of Tell, according to PPS.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the detention in Nablus, noting that the detention was carried out over suspicions that the Palestinian was an alleged Hamas operative.

Meanwhile, Ayoub Abu Haniyeh, Qais Shbeita, Wajeh Akram Silat, and Musab Radwan were detained from Qalqiliya, according to PPS, which stated that Abu Haniyeh and Shbeita were detained from the village of Azzun.

The spokesperson confirmed one detention in Qalqiliya city, while also confirming the two detained in Azzun, one of whom was detained for being an alleged Hamas operative.

Meanwhile, in the central West Bank district of Ramallah and al-Bireh, three Palestinians were detained.

PPS said that Yahya Hassan al-Khatib was detained from the village of Beit Rima, while Basil Ezghir and Maher al-Khatib were detained from Umm al-Sharayit.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed a detention in Beit Rima, saying that the detainee was an alleged Hamas operative, and confirmed the detentions in Umm al-Sharayit. The spokesperson added that three additional detentions were carried out in the district, including a Palestinian from the village of Silwad.

PPS also reported that four unidentified Palestinians were detained from the West Bank’s Jerusalem district.

Towards the south, in the Bethlehem district, PPS reported four detentions.

Marwan Hussein Issa was detained from the village of al-Khader; Khalil Khader Shukeh was detained from Bethlehem city, Ahmad Zaal al-Sahouri was detained from Zaatara, and Hussein Abu Raad, a lawyer, was detained from the village of Marah Rabah in southern Bethlehem.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed these detentions.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the occupied West Bank. The UN recorded an average of 95 weekly raids in the occupied West Bank in 2016, and a biweekly average of 78 raids thus far in 2017.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,500 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of January.
