RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 22 Palestinians -- 12 of whom from a Bethlehem-area refugee camp alone -- in overnight raids between Wednesday and Thursday in the occupied Palestinian territory, Palestinian and Israeli sources said.

Israeli forces carry out detention raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-nightly basis, with the UN recording an average of 95 weekly raids in the West Bank in 2016, and 100 weekly raids thus far in 2017.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were detained in Israeli prisons as of October 2016.

Southern and central West Bank

In the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) reported that 13 Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces, identifying them as Asaad Rashid Darwish, 19, Ali Muhammad Abu Srour, Islam Jawarish, 30, Ali Hassan Abu Srour, 20, Samed Atiq, Ramzi Qawar, 32, Muhammad Odeh, Muhammad Jumaa Uweis, Abdullah Hamad, Mustafa Ibrahim Qneis, 32, Fathi Abu Srour, Majd Akram Abu Khdeir, 21, and Mahmoud Sabatin.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed to Ma'an 13 detentions in the district, listing one detention in the village of Husan and 12 in Aida refugee camp.

They added that the raid in Aida was a joint operation between the army and the Shin Bet intelligence agency to detain locals for unspecified “illegal activities.”

In the Hebron district, PPS reported the detention of Youssif Abd al-Aziz Maghnam, 50, and his son Hussein, 22.

The army spokesperson said two Palestinians were detained in the Hebron-area village of Yatta, while another was detained in the city of Hebron.

PPS also said Thaer Abu Sbeih, 20, was detained in Jerusalem, without specifying whether it was occupied East Jerusalem or the Jerusalem district of the West Bank. The army made no mention of a Jerusalem-area detention.

Northern West Bank

In the northern West Bank, PPS said that Israeli forces detained Omar Husni Ghawadra in the Jenin district, as well as Samer Samih Sawafta and Saher Anis Abu Muhsen in the Tubas district.

The army mentioned one detention in the Jenin district, as well as two in the city of Tubas.
