Israeli forces detain Hamas-affiliated Palestinian lawmaker in Hebron

06:00 Nov 28 2016 Hebron

Description
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained Hamas-affiliated Palestinian lawmaker Azzam Nuaman Salhab during a raid in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron on Monday morning, his family told Ma'an.

According to the family, large numbers of Israeli troops stormed the home of 60-year-old Salhab and thoroughly searched the house before taking the Palestinian MP into custody.

Separately, Israeli forces detained Anas Hatim Qafisha -- the son of oft-imprisoned Hamas MP Hatem Qafisha -- and Asim Amr Ubeido in Hebron, locals reported.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that five “Hamas operatives” had been detained overnight in the Palestinian city.

Monday reportedly marked the fifth time Salhab has been detained by Israeli forces since he was elected as member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in 2006, each time held under Israel's policy of administrative detention -- internment without trial or charges.

Most recently, Salhab was released from Israeli custody in July 2015.

According to prisoners rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were detained by Israel as of October, six of whom members of the PLC, while 720 were held in administrative detention.

Although Israeli authorities claim the withholding of evidence during administrative detention, which allows detention for three- to six-month renewable intervals based on undisclosed evidence, is essential for state security concerns, rights groups have instead claimed the policy allows Israeli authorities to hold Palestinians for an indefinite period of time without showing any evidence that could justify their detentions.

Rights groups have claimed that Israel's administrative detention policy has been used as an attempt to disrupt Palestinian political and social processes, notably targeting Palestinian politicians, activists, and journalists.
