JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- An Israeli security guard Friday shot dead a Palestinian near the Shufat checkpoint in the Jerusalem area for allegedly attempting a stabbing attack on a group of Israeli security officers.
Israeli police spokesperson, Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that a Palestinian “approached [Israeli] security guards with a knife, and attempted to stab the guards.” Israeli forces responded with live fire. Israeli police later declared that the Palestinian had been killed in the alleged attack.
Rosenfeld added in a statement that no Israeli security guards were injured during the incident.
Witnesses told Ma’an that Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances rushed to the area following the incident. A Palestinian Red Crescent spokesperson was not available for immediate comment on the incident.
The slain Palestinian has not yet been identified.
According to Ma'an documentation, the slain Palestinian is the latest of 241 Palestinians to have been killed by Israelis since the beginning of a wave of unrest across the occupied Palestinian territory in October 2015, the majority of whom were shot dead by Israeli forces.
Six Palestinians have been killed at the Qalandiya checkpoint alone in that time period, and 12 have been killed by security guards.
During the same time period, 34 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians.
Throughout the unrest, rights groups have repeatedly denounced what they have termed Israeli forces' "shoot-to-kill" policy against Palestinians who did not constitute a threat at the time of their death or who could have been subdued in a non-lethal manner.
While Israel alleges many of those were attempting to attack Israelis when they were shot, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel's version of events in a number of cases.
This is a developing story.

by Nir Hasson for Haaretz, Nov 25, 2016 10:12 PM
A 16-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli security forces at a roadblock in East Jerusalem on Friday after he allegedly tried to stab one of them.
According to the police, security forces were checking passengers on a minibus that arrived from the Shoafat refugee camp when the teen drew a knife from under his shirt and tried to stab an officer. The teen, Mohammed Nabil, was a resident of Shoafat.
Earlier this week a Palestinian from the West Bank was shot dead after trying to stab a security guard at Qalandiya checkpoint. According to Palestinian sources, the suspected assailant was Jihad Mohammed Khalil, 48, from the village Beit Wazan near Nablus. The police said Khalil raised suspicions when he approached the security guards. When the guards asked him to show his ID he drew a knife and tried to stab one of them.
In October, a 19-year-old soldier was moderately wounded in a stabbing in Qalandiya. The stabber, a 28-year-old resident of the village of Aqab, was shot dead. According to the police, he ran toward the checkpoint and stabbed the soldier with a knife. He was then shot and killed by security forces and civilian guards.
