BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian was killed by Israeli forces on Thursday afternoon after allegedly attempting to stab an Israeli soldier in the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an that a Palestinian "armed with a knife attempted to stab an Israeli soldier guarding a bus stop" near the illegal settlement of Ofra.

She said that Israeli forces shot at the Palestinian, "resulting in his death."

The army spokesperson said that she was not aware of any Israelis being injured in the case.

Israeli forces reportedly prevented Palestinian medics from approaching the scene, eyewitnesses said, adding that Israeli medical teams did not treat him, leaving him to bleed to death.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain youth as Maen Nasser al-Din Abu Qaraa, 23, from the village of al-Mazraa al-Qibliyaa in the Ramallah district.

Locals told Ma'an that Israeli forces closed the entrances and the roads to the nearby villages of Silwad town and Ein Yabrud following the killing, preventing Palestinians from going in and out of the two municipalities.

Abu Qaraa is the 238th to be killed by an Israeli since the beginning of a wave of unrest across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October 2015, the vast majority of whom were shot dead by Israeli forces.

During the same time period, 34 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians.
Throughout the unrest, rights groups have repeatedly denounced what they have termed Israeli forces' "shoot-to-kill" policy against Palestinians who did not constitute a threat at the time of their death or who could have been subdued in a non-lethal manner.

While Israel alleges many of those were attempting to attack Israelis when they were shot, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel's version of events in a number of cases.

A suspected stabbing attack took place Thursday in the West Bank, the Israeli army said.

According to initial reports, a Palestinian approached the hitchhiking post outside the settlements of Ofra and attempted to stab soldiers guarding the area. He was then shot dead.

The incident comes after two earlier attacks this week. On Monday, three Israeli soldiers were wounded in a shooting attack at a checkpoint close to the West Bank settlement of Beit El. The Palestinian assailant, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, was shot and killed at the scene.

A car-ramming attack near Hebron wounded three Israeli Border Police officers on Sunday. The Palestinian driver was shot dead at the scene.
On Saturday evening, gunmen opened fire toward Israelis driving near the Karmei Tzur settlement. No casualties or damage were reported and a manhunt is underway for the assailants.
