RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot and seriously injured a young Palestinian man on Friday night, after he allegedly attempted to commit a car-ramming and subsequent stabbing attack on Israeli soldiers near the village of Ein Yabrud east of Ramallah.
Local sources told Ma'an that Israeli forces opened fire at Ahmad Ayman Hamid, 21, while he was driving his car near the village.
Witnesses highlighted that Israeli forces on the main road of the village opened fire at Hamid while he was in his car, and left him to bleed before taking him to a hospital later on.
Locals added that Israeli forces raided Hamid's family home in the predawn hours of Saturday morning and interrogated his family.
An Israeli army spokepserson told Ma'an on Saturday that after a failed attempt to ram Israeli soldiers with his car at a checkpoint between the village and the illegal settlement of Ofra on Friday night, "responding to the threat, Israeli forces fired towards the assailant."
According to the army spokesperson, "the assailant then exited the vehicle holding a knife and attempted to stab the soldiers," after which forces "fired towards the assailant," injuring him, and then transported him to the hospital.
It remained unclear what condition Hamid remained in on Saturday.
Friday nights events left Hamid among the hundreds of Palestinians who have been severely injured or killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers since a wave of violence spread across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October 2015.
The violence has been largely characterized by alleged, attempted, and actual small-scale attacks committed by Palestinians against uniformed Israeli soldiers or police, mainly using knives or similar weapons.
Dozens of the alleged attackers have been shot at military checkpoints, like the Ofra checkpoint where Hamid was shot.
Israel has come under repeated criticism for failing to carry out due process in response to alleged and actual attacks, particularly in regard to the apparent extrajudicial executions of Palestinians who no longer posed a threat when they were killed.
