Description
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli magistrate's court of Jerusalem released seven Palestinians from detention on Tuesday, while extending the detention of another, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).
Lawyer for PPS in Jerusalem Mufid al-Hajj said in a statement that Ibrahim Suleiman Sanduqa, Mutaz Suleiman Sanduqa, Ramzi Muhammad al-Jubeh, Muhammad Hani Mahlus, and Mustafa Imad Eweis were released from detention on the condition that they pay a fine of 500 shekels ($131), and upon paying a bail of 5,000 shekels ($1,311).
Samer Abu Qadus and Sharif Taha were also released on the condition of paying a 1,000 shekels ($262) fine and a bail of 5,000 shekels.
Meanwhile, the detention of Nawras Abu Ghazaleh was extended until next Friday. He was detained after posting “our time has come” on Facebook, amid an increasing crackdown by Israel on Palestinian activists, journalists, and civilians for alleged “incitement” on social media.
Israeli authorities have commonly released other Jerusalemite Palestinians from detention on conditions of banning them from the city or the Al-Aqsa Mosque, putting them on house arrest, and paying fines and bails.
Since a deadly shooting attack on Sunday in occupied East Jerusalem left an Israeli police officer and Israeli woman killed, Israeli forces have conducted widespread, violent detention campaigns across Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.
The gunman, who was shot dead by Israeli police on the scene, had previously been imprisoned over incitement on Facebook, and had also been banned from Al-Aqsa and the Jerusalem municipality by Israeli authorities.
According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians are currently being held in Israeli prisons, 500 of whom are from East Jerusalem.
