Description
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- An Israeli court has issued prison sentences against five young Palestinians from Jerusalem for periods ranging from four to nine years on Tuesday.

The head of the Jerusalem Committee for Families of Prisoners, Amjad Abu Asab, said in a statement Wednesday that an Israeli Central Court judge had sentenced 26-year-old Bassil Khalil Muhammad Sayyad to six-and-a-half years in prison and 22-year-old Said Mahmoud Abu al-Hawa to five years, for charges unspecified in the statement.

Sayyad and Abu al-Hawa are both from the village of al-Tur in the Jerusalem district of the occupied West Bank. In addition to their sentences, the two were also ordered to pay fines, the amounts of which were unspecified in the statement.

The court also sentenced Nuh Ghazzawi, from the al-Thawri neighborhood of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem, to four years in prison after he was convicted of “fighting back Israeli settlers,” according to Abu Asab.

Abu Asab added that the court sentenced 19-year-old Youssef Ribhi Murtada Rajabi from the Old City of East Jerusalem to nine years in prison. Rajabi was detained on Nov. 24 near a light rail station in West Jerusalem for allegedly carrying a knife, which was found on him by a light rail employee during a random search. He was convicted of possessing a knife and attempting to carry out a stabbing attack.

Rajabi has been transferred between several Israeli prisons since the beginning of his detention, and is currently being held at the Ramon prison in southern Israel.

The Israeli court also sentenced Usama Mahmoud Rajabi, 23, from the Old City of East Jerusalem to five years and three months in prison. He was detained on Sept. 8, 2015 and convicted of several charges related to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He is currently held at the Nafha prison.

According to Palestinian prisoners’ right group Addameer, there were 7,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody as of August, 500 of whom were from occupied East Jerusalem. The group estimates that 40 percent of Palestinian men have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
