BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian girl was detained after allegedly carrying out a stabbing attack on a soldier at a checkpoint in the northern occupied West Bank on Sunday evening, Israeli security forces said.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that an “assailant armed with a knife” exited a vehicle at a checkpoint near the illegal Israeli settlement of Shaqed in the district of Jenin and stabbed a female Israeli soldier.
The spokesperson added that the suspect was detained at the scene, and that the soldier was being treated after being “lightly injured.”
Official Palestinian sources have identified the detained Palestinian as 15-year-old Amal Jamal Qabha.
The spokesperson said they could not confirm initial reports that the detained Palestinian was a teenage girl.
Since a wave of unrest first swept across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October, a number of alleged stabbing and attempted stabbing attacks have been carried out by Palestinians, mainly on Israeli security forces.
During this time period, some 217 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis and 32 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians, with human rights groups denouncing Israeli forces’ “shoot-to-kill policy” when dealing with alleged Palestinian attackers.
