Israeli forces detain 6 Palestinians in Hebron district amid ongoing siege

Description
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces raided several areas of the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron overnight Saturday, detaining at least six Palestinians, including the sister of a Palestinian boy who was shot dead Thursday after stabbing an Israeli girl to death, amid an ongoing siege imposed by Israel on the city of Hebron in the wake of the attack and two other deadly incidents in the city.

Local sources told Ma’an that Israeli forces raided the village of Bani Naim in Hebron and detained Lara Nasser Tarayra, 22, whose 17-year-old brother Muhammad Nasser Tarayra stabbed 13-year-old Hallel Yafa Ariel to death in her bed in the nearby illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba.

Bani Naim was been placed under complete lockdown, and Israeli forces overnight Thursday detained Nasser Tarayra, Lara and Muhammad’s father. Israeli leadership had called for the arrest of the mother and sister, their trial and expulsion to another area in the West Bank, due to their “praise” of slain Muhammad.

No reports have emerged that Lara and Muhammad's mother has been detained.

A statement issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office also announced plans to demolish the Tarayra family home and revoke work permits of his family members. On Saturday, Israel revoked the permits of 2,700 residents of Bani Naim to enter Israel.

The attack was followed by an alleged attempted stab attack by another one of Bani Naim’s residents on Friday near the Ibrahimi Mosque at an Israeli checkpoint in the Tel Rumeida area. Sarah Tarayra, 27, was shot dead on the scene, with no Israeli injuries reported. Despite sharing a surname with the Tarayras, it remained unclear if she was a direct relation.

Israeli forces also raided Tel Rumeida in central Hebron overnight Saturday, detaining a retired lieutenant, Khalid Muhammad al-Madhun, 61.

Fadda Ismail Hadib, 47, his brother Said, 45, and Tariq Muhammad Hasa Hadib, 32, were all detained from the al-Hijrah area and al-Fawwar refugee camp southwest of central Hebron.

A sixth Palestinian was detained overnight in Hebron, but has not been identified. An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed six detentions were made in Hebron, and informed Ma’an of two additional detentions in the district of Bethlehem.

Israeli forces upgraded their siege on Bani Naim on Friday to a complete blockade on the entirety of Hebron after a shooting attack killed an Israeli settler, critically injured his wife, and lightly to moderately injured his two children, as they were driving on Route 60 outside of their home in the Otniel settlement in southwest Hebron.

The siege blocks the right to freedom of movement of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, restricting all passage out of the city of Hebron and its surrounding villages --in the West Bank's most populous district -- to humanitarian and military cases only.

Israeli forces continued their search for the shooter into Sunday, and reportedly detained several suspects overnight Friday in connection to the attack.

In the wake of the attacks in Hebron, residents near the areas of the illegal Israeli settlements Kiryat Arba and Otniel told Ma’an they feared revenge attacks by Israeli settlers.

More than 220 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis and some 32 Israelis killed by Palestinians since the a wave of unrest first swept across the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel in October.

Israeli authorities commonly implement punitive measures against Palestinians following attacks on Israeli civilians and military personnel, including imposing closures on Palestinian villages and towns, revoking Israeli-issued work permits for family members of alleged attackers, and demolishing the homes of attackers' families.

Such actions have been condemned by rights group, who have said the punitive measures amount to “collective punishment” and represent a clear violation of international law.
